The US Food and Drug Administration has approved an ingestible digital sensor that can be swallowed in a pill to track health data .

The pill, known as the Ingestion Event Marker, has already been approved for use in Europe. It is the first ''digital pill" to receive FDA approval.

A signal from the pill in the stomach is sent through the body to a patch on the skin, which is sent to a cellphone application.
