Robberies of bank clients carrying big sums of money have dropped this year according to the SA Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric)
CEO Kalyani Pillay said 717 such robberies had been reported between January and August, compared to 793 in the same period last year.
She urged people to avoid making large cash withdrawals or carrying money to make cash deposits.
"It is important for people to be aware of what's happening and to take precautions against it," she told reporters in Midrand.
Organised crime syndicates were usually behind this type of crime.
"Patterns allow perpetrators to pick up on movements of people," Pillay said.
"Usually... they have people within the bank called 'spotters' who identify targets."
