Dogs tried to rescue a toddler from drowning in a residential swimming pool in Pietermaritzburg on Friday, paramedics said.

"In their frantic attempt to save the child it appears that they severely mauled her one arm," Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said.

Neighbours saw the two-year-old girl lying on the edge of the pool after the dogs had pulled her out of the water.

Paramedics arrived to find she had died on the scene.
