Tenders are destroying health: Motsoaledi

Tenders need to be reduced as they are destroying the public health system, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said.

The Sowetan reported that Motsoaledi intended to clamp down on tenders in the health department.

"The replacement of the health care system with a tender-care system has destroyed our public health system in this country, and it needs to be reversed," Motsoaledi said.

This was the position he took at the African National Congress' policy conference. Motsoaledi said that much of the health budget was spent on tenders.

Of the annual budget of R121 billion, the department paid R6 billion to security companies.

"We are going to try by all means to do things in-house.

"In this way we can train people and then hire them with better benefits and pay," he said.
