All 20 Western Cape schools facing closure at the end of the year are taking legal action to keep their doors open, the Cape Times reported on Wednesday.

The schools were seeking an urgent interdict in the Western Cape High Court to compel the provincial education department to keep them open. The schools also wanted the court to review and set aside the department's decision.

The legal action was being organised by the Save Our Schools campaign, linked to the African National Congress.

The urgent application would be filed on or before Friday, with the application heard in court by November 30.

Western Cape education MEC Donald Grant announced the closures last month for reasons that included dwindling pupil numbers and multi-grade teaching. His spokeswoman Bronagh Casey told the newspaper the MEC would not revise his decision.
