A foreigner who allegedly killed a fellow countryman with a pickaxe handle was caught and assaulted by Diepsloot residents, Gauteng police said.

The residents, of Diepsloot extension four, then alerted the police, said Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela.

The man, who sustained head and body injuries, was taken to a local hospital, where he was under police guard. He would appear soon in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court.

Mavimbela said he had been wanted for a murder in Diepsloot extension 12 on Saturday.

During the attack, he accused the other man of stealing his Okapi knife, and threatened a third man with the knife when he tried to intervene, said Mavimbela.
