Former president Nelson Mandela's health was continuing to improve, the presidency says.

"Doctors attending to former president Mandela continued to report that he was making progress and were satisfied with the way he was responding to treatment," said spokesman Mac Maharaj.

Mandela, 94, was transported from his home in Qunu, Eastern Cape, on Saturday and hospitalised at 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria.

The presidency said he was suffering from the recurrence of a previous lung infection and was responding to treatment.

The presidency reiterated its request that Mandela and his family be accorded the necessary space and privacy.

"We also thank the media and the public for [their] co-operation," said Maharaj.
