A Johannesburg metro police officer was dragged "a considerable distance" by a minibus taxi after attempting to stop the vehicle on the M1 south highway.

Metro police spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said members of the public stopped the taxi driver after seeing the metro officer being dragged under the vehicle near Corlett Drive.

He was arrested and would appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday to face charges of attempted murder and failing to stop for a traffic officer in uniform.

The officer, whose name had not yet been released, was taken to Milpark Hospital in a serious condition.
