A Cape Town pupil will appear in court this week in connection with the shooting of two fellow-pupils in a minibus taxi, Western Cape police said on Wednesday.
Lt-Col Norman Joseph said the 14-year-old and two other pupils at the Oaklands Secondary School in Lansdowne were returning home in the vehicle on Tuesday afternoon.
"It was then that the suspect produced a firearm and shot the two learners in full view of shocked commuters," he said.
A Grade Eight pupil was shot in the hand and leg, and a Grade 10 pupil in the right leg. They were in a stable condition in Groote Schuur hospital.
"While the school is investigating the incident, the Western Cape education department has requested a full report on the incident," Joseph said.
The National Prosecuting Authority's provincial spokesman Eric Ntabazalila said the youth did not appear in court on Wednesday. He referred all further enquiries to police.
Provincial police spokesman Lt-Col Andre Traut said that as the accused was a juvenile, he was the court's responsibility and police could not comment.
Comment could not be obtained from either the Athlone or Wynberg magistrate's courts because they were closed for the day.
