Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe turns 89 today, making him Africa's oldest ruler seeking re-election despite persistent speculation about his health.

The Zanu-PF veteran's handlers last night held a fundraising dinner in his honour to kick-start celebrations that will culminate in a music bash and a soccer tournament on March 2. The festivities are expected to cost up to $1-million.

"I urge Zimbabweans to dedicate 89 minutes to the president and show love through social work," said Absalom Sikhosana, spokesman for the 21st February Movement, which arranges his birthday celebrations.

Mining companies in Zimbabwe have also come together to mint special coins in gold, diamond and platinum to mark the day.

Reports last year claimed Mugabe was suffering from advanced prostate cancer, triggering fears of a succession battle in Zanu-PF.

But in terms of Zimbabwe's new draft constitution, he could effectively rule for another 10 years.

Zimbabwe is set to vote in a referendum on the new constitution on March 16, followed by national elections later in the year.

Mugabe, who describes himself as a keen tennis player, says his longevity is largely due to his booze-free diet and daily exercise.
