Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane has only a few months in which to fulfil the promises she made when she came to office in 2009, the DA said yesterday.

"The Gauteng health department is in deep financial trouble, with deteriorating services and many suppliers still not paid," DA Gauteng caucus leader Jack Bloom said. "Her major failure is in job creation, which is why Khulu Radebe, the head of the economic development department, was suspended after she blamed him for the collapse of youth employment projects that were announced with great fanfare in last year's state of the province address."

Bloom said the premier had "refused to heed calls for a referendum" on e-tolling.

Mokonyane will deliver her state of the province address today.

ANC Gauteng chief whip Brian Hlongwa said the province was preparing for "war". ANC members in the provincial legislature, Mokonyane and members of the executive council had met for four days in Pretoria last week to assess the work of the government.

"The outcomes of the caucus last week are clear: that we must ensure that our public representatives appreciate and are adequately prepared for the challenge of next year's election," he said.
