A teenager drowned on Wednesday afternoon in Thompson's Bay near the Wild Coast, paramedics said. The boy was swimming with a friend when he experienced difficulties, Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said.

"His friend swam to help him and in the end had to be rescued."

Botha said paramedics arrived at the scene and found that the teenagers, estimated to be 14, had been pulled out of the water.

One of them was declared dead at the scene. The other was transported to a hospital in Port Shepstone.
