A safe has been stolen from the exhibit room of the Alberton police station, Gauteng police said on Friday.

Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said the theft was discovered when the exhibit clerk reported for duty on Friday morning.

It was either stolen on Thursday night, or early on Friday morning.

"It is alleged that there was a break-in, where the main door and the burglar [bars] were damaged," Dlamini said.

"The safe was then dragged out of the office and stolen. It is unknown what type of vehicle was used by the suspect(s) to remove the safe, but it may not fit into a sedan vehicle.

"At this stage, an audit is still being done at the exhibit room to establish the exact contents of the safe," he said.
