When British acid jazz band The Brand New Heavies released their self-titled debut in 1990, vinyls were still the rage, and Princess Diana had not divorced Prince Charles.

When they close the opening night of the 14th Cape Town International Jazz Festival next month, young 'uns Zonke and Mafikizolo would have appeared on the main Kippies stage.

Thandiswa Mazwai and Jill Scott are set to play at Kippies too.

But with a quarter of a century together under their belts, is the five-man band looking to score with a younger audience?

"Our fans go back a while, but we're also trying to reach out to new fans," admitted Jan Kincaid in an interview with The Times.

"Our sound always changes here and there organically, and we're listening to music all the time, so you kind of take it all in like sponges."

Their 75-minute set list on April 5 will be a collection of their biggest hits, and should include Dream on Dreamer, You Are The Universe, and Never Stop.

Kincaid promised new material from the upcoming eighth studio album, Forward . The album comes almost seven years after their previous one, Get Used To It .

Kincaid added: "We had a live record out in between and we've been on the road and Andrew [Levy] and Simon [Bartholomew] have had children . We've not stopped working as a band - we've just not put a record out."

Kincaid, Bartholomew and Levy have known each other since school.

Bartholomew said the most exciting thing about being back in Cape Town was that they had not been in the country for years. He said: "It's a more exciting time to come now than it was."

The festival runs during the weekend of April 5 and 6 at the International Convention Centre.

It will also feature Jimmy Dludlu, Gregory Porter, Mi Casa, Robert Glasper Experiment and MF Doom.
