Protesters burnt tyres and threw stones on Randfontein Road in Roodepoort, west of Johannesburg, metro police said.

Spokesman Wayne Minnaar said the road had been closed between Corlett and Impala Avenues.

It was not immediately clear why residents were protesting.

Minnaar said motorists should use Ontdekkers Road as an alternative route.
