Regional mediators have postponed a summit meeting at which Zimbabwe's readiness for a general election was to be assessed, a South African official said yesterday.

The talks had been scheduled for Sunday in South Africa.

No reason was given for the postponement, and a new date for the meeting of presidents of the 15-member Southern African Development Community has not been announced

The summit was expected to discuss various issues, including the cash-strapped Zimbabwean government's efforts to raise $132-million (R1.309-billion) to finance the election.

Zimbabwe's Constitutional Court has ruled that the election must be held no later than July 31.
