Eight people were injured in a crash that caused the closure of a section of the M1 highway in Sandton on Friday, Johannesburg metro police said.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the M1 North highway just before Grayston Drive was closed when three vehicles crashed and a car caught fire.

"The accident, which involves a truck, a taxi and a car, is causing major traffic delays in Johannesburg," said Minnaar.

Six people from the taxi as well as the truck driver and his passenger were injured, Minnaar said.

Motorists were advised to use alternative roads such as Oxford Road.
