Could it be the smallest brothel in the world?

According to residents of Durban's Glenwood it is "the littlest whorehouse".

A portable toilet on Ferguson Road earned this nickname after residents spotted sex workers taking clients into it in broad daylight several times this month.

The toilet was installed a month ago to cater for construction workers, who have been repairing Frere Road. But the prostitutes in the area quickly took over the toilet when the workers left it to work down the road.

"The [toilet's] lock was stolen so it is in use 24 hours a day," Heather Rorick, chairman of the Bulwer Community Safety Forum, said.

"[Prostitutes' clients] go into the portaloo and pay R50 for a quickie."

By yesterday afternoon the toilet had been moved.

Such is the extent of prostitution in the area that photographs of some homes on Google Earth show prostitutes nearby.

Last week the community threatened to name and shame the women's clients and marched against prostitution.

Rorick said then that the sex workers use "our driveways as toilets", expose themselves and solicit customers at businesses.

Durban metro police spokesman Senior Superintendent Eugene Msomi said officers were arresting prostitutes every week.

"We can arrest the women only for contravening our bylaws, such as loitering with the purposes of prostitution. The challenge is prosecution. When it goes to court, loitering is a minor offence and is thrown out," he said.
