I fully agree with Prof Jansen about creating a culture of innovation in South Africa.

Very few countries offer as many opportunities for progressive minds as the US - it is there that people like Bill Gates, Sergey Brin and Errol Musk can thrive.

Having graduated from a US university many years ago, I know that competitiveness and hard work are the norm there.

But at that time many, like me, returned to South Africa after the completion of their studies.

South African engineers are well trained and can work anywhere in the world.

The question is, what can be done to retain them? Because there are, even now, highly capable and experienced engineers in South Africa, even though some have retired, who can run circles around the Cuban engineers and other imported talent.
