Revellers in the UK are being offered up to £200 to report their friends who drink and drive this Christmas.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the West Midlands police have announced the bounty in an attempt to curb drunken driving.

Inspector Greg Jennings said: "It's the same story every year; people think it is acceptable to have a few drinks with their family or friends and then get behind the wheel.

"They probably wouldn't dream of drunk driving or taking drugs at other times of the year but lose their common sense at Christmas.

"We are urging anyone who is aware of people breaking the law to pick up the phone and report these selfish individuals."

People can call anonymously and, if offenders are prosecuted, could earn a reward of up to £200.

"The message is simple: drunk driving kills and making a call could save a life.

"There are devastated families across the country who have had their loved ones go out and then not come home, all because of a driver who selfishly got behind the wheel after drinking or taking drugs." He said the problem extended to the morning after, when people could still be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

"People giving us information will directly influence our patrols and could well prevent a family experiencing a tragedy this Christmas, as well as bringing people before the courts.

"The festive period is always the worst time for such offences."
