Twenty six people have drowned in Limpopo since the start of the festive season, police said on Tuesday.

"Twelve of those who have drowned are children aged between one and 14-years-old," said Colonel Ronel Otto.

Police divers had recovered all the bodies.

She advised local residents and parents to always be aware of where their children were, and not allow children to go to dams, rivers and swimming pools alone.

Otto cautioned people against drinking alcohol and having parties close to dams and rivers.

"We also having a problem with people going to fish when they cannot swim," said Otto.

"You find that they sometimes fall out of their canoes or slip from the river banks and they cannot swim."

She urged people to be cautious around water.
