An off-duty paramedic who thought he was stopping to help an injured man in the middle of the road in Vereeniging was robbed and stabbed eight times in a botched hijacking.
Ryno Strydom, 30, was on his way to work yesterday afternoon when he stopped for the man, thinking he was a hit-and-run victim, and got out to assist - only for the man to jump up as two other men came running from the side of the road.
ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said the trio stole Strydom's wallet, watch and cellphone and stabbed him eight times in the throat, chest, back and legs, before trying to steal his car.
Strydom managed to get back into his car and drive 12km to the ER24 base where he was stabilised before being rushed to theEmfuleni Mediclinic.
Vermaak said Strydom was expected to be discharged last night.
A week earlier, two ER24 paramedics were robbed at gunpoint in Gugulethu in the Western Cape .
