Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa's spokesman Zweli Mnisi has resigned, the police ministry said on Tuesday.

Mthethwa accepted his resignation and Mnisi was now serving notice until the end of February.

"I was approached and offered a senior management position in the private sector, with one of the multinationals within the information, communication and technology industry," Mnisi said in a statement.

"I have accepted the offer."

Mnisi indicated that he intended to further his studies. He had worked as Mthethwa's spokesman for the past four years. Mthethwa wished him well in his new position.

"Zweli has served the ministry of police with excellence, dedication, and I am certain this is a sentiment that is shared by many people," Mthethwa said.

"Much as I would have liked to still have him on board, I do understand that this new position provides him with a platform to advance his goals and career," he said.
