Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille has challenged President Jacob Zuma to release two large tracts of government-owned land for housing.

This comes amid protests from ANC leaders and shack-dwellers who are demanding that the DA-run city and Western Cape government release land in areas like Constantia.

De Lille wrote that the provision of low-cost housing in Cape Town required his "urgent intervention".

"There are two holdings owned by the public works department which, if released for housing purposes, would play a significant role in helping to address the housing backlog," she wrote.
