No one has come forward to claim the body of a child found under a bridge in Diepsloot, northern Johannesburg.

Police spokesman Katlego Mogale said yesterday it appeared that the body had been abandoned there. The girl was estimated to be between three and four.

"We will wait for post-mortem results. We are in the dark about what could have happened and about the identity of her family. There is no [report] of a missing person," said Mogale.

The body was discovered by a passer-by who contacted the police.

A community leader in Diepsloot, Joe Masemola, said he was not aware of a child being missing or having been killed.

"Community members have not raised the alarm about a missing child," said Masemola.

Since September at least three other children have been found dead in unusual circumstances in Diepsloot.

In October, the bodies of cousins Yanelisa and Zandile Mali, aged two and three respectively, were found in a public toilet.

The month before a resident found the body of five-year-old Anelisa Mkhondo under a rubbish heap.
