More young South Africans would rather have money than sex, most young women prefer lovers with circumcised penises and more than 80% of youths believe abortion is murder.

These are among the findings made by the Praekelt Foundation on its Young Africa Live mobile platform in December. The goal of Young Africa Live is to inform youths about the realities of HIV/Aids.

The Youth Sex Opinion Poll, now in its third year, forms part of the platform's engagement with its 1.8 million users in South Africa.

Praekelt Foundation founder Gustav Praekelt said nearly 18000 users were interviewed.

The majority of respondents (65.3%) said they had either a single, long-term partner or were abstaining from sex. Nearly half (48%) said they would have protected sex with an HIV-positive partner.

About 35% said they had multiple partners, and 10% admitted to not always using condoms.

Nearly 40% of respondents said they always use condoms, compared to 11.9% who said they don't.

Others abstained from sex.

More than 80% believed it was the responsibility of both men and women to carry condoms.

Diepkloof resident Owen Vele, 32, said he lived a reckless life before he came across the platform.

"I never worried over the consequences of my behaviour and put my life at risk many times, but all of that has changed now that I have this platform," said Vele.

User Thendo Maponya said adults endangered youths by not speaking openly to them about sex.

She said: "They forget that as we grow up, we meet different people and do a lot of the things they think we don't do or talk to us about."

Many users (23.6%) said they gained most of their knowledge about sex from the platform itself.

Only 8.7% learnt about sex from their parents or guardians, 12.3% from siblings and 13.2% from the internet.

The poll's other findings were that 38% of users believed rough sex could lead to domestic violence, 77% of users felt youths as a whole don't take HIV seriously and 63% believed men and women have the same opportunities.
