ANC-owned investment company Chancellor House's decision to sell its shares in Hitachi Power Africa just before the general election is clear proof that the ANC corruptly uses income from state contracts to finance its election campaign, DA leader Helen Zille said on Saturday.

Launching the DA Mpumalanga election campaign in Mbombela (Nelspruit), Zille told about 800 supporters in sweltering heat that the ANC stood to make billions from the sale.

Switching between English, Siswati, Xhosa and Afrikaans, she attacked President Jacob Zuma head-on after extolling the virtues of former President Thabo Mbeki.

"Hitachi Power Africa got contracts of R38-billion to install boilers at the new Medupi and Kusile power stations. But these contracts have been delayed by contractors' bungles, including those of Hitachi.

"This is corruption, pure and simple. Zuma's ANC is getting contracts from Zuma's government, contracts that they then mess up, causing big delays and power emergencies for the whole of South Africa, which makes more people unemployed.

"Then Zuma's ANC sells its shares and uses the profits to get him re-elected.

"While President Zuma's government is profiting from the electricity crisis, electricity prices have risen 300% under his leadership," said Zille.
