A second attack on Clive Derby-Lewis at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre shows a "breakdown in control of the prison".

This is Gaye Derby-Lewis's explanation as to why her husband, the convicted killer of former SACP leader Chris Hani, was stabbed for a second time this year.

"Now he has been stabbed twice," she said.

She said Derby-Lewis was in hospital yesterday receiving treatment for the wound in his back.

The prisoner, who used a broken glass bottle to stab Derby-Lewis, was not the same as the man who attacked him with a sharpened spoon last month.

Derby-Lewis said her husband was targeted because he was 78 and couldn't retaliate.

"He does have a single cell, but he doesn't sit in his cell all day. He is very involved in the prison. He runs soccer tournaments," she said.

Derby-Lewis said since the Waterkloof two were sent back to prison, there had been a clampdown on illicit activity.

"Drug supplies to prisoners were restricted. It led to problems. There is a breakdown in authority at the prison," she said.

Derby-Lewis maintains her husband should have been released in October 2008, when he was recommended for parole the first time.

"If you have been recommended for parole and led an exemplary life behind bars, the law says you should get it," she said.

All four of her husband's parole applications have been rejected by the minister of correctional services.
