Jackie Myburgh Chemaly explains the subtleties of aged threads and why they can be so appealing

Antique Clothes

Anything with lace and a bone corset, and likely to be sold at Reminiscene in Melville. Antique fashion aficionados swoon over the costumes in Downton Abbey and Mad Men - and they really dress like that when they go out.

Vintage Clothes

Trendy street style stars like Daisy Lowe, Agyness Deyn, Kirsten Dunst and Alexa Chung are behind the modern vintage movement. Modern vintage is simply something that belonged to someone else before you - it could be a day old and still have the price on it. It's unlikely to be more than 20 years old. Modern Vintage shopping is all about finding unique fashion pieces no one else has. Designer vintage is the ultimate since you'll probably pay a fraction of the price for a label you only dreamt of owning.

Plain old second-hand clothes

When vintage swerves into seriously dull territory. If your once loved piece of clothing is nothing special (ugly brown cardi in polyester knit) and you're unlikely to be asked where you got it, it's plain old second-hand. Nothing wrong with that, just don't expect to be photographed by The Sartorialist.
