A family of five was burnt alive in an open bakkie at the weekend while visiting a homestead in Mambalweni, Ntabankulu, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Sunday around 8pm, Colonel Sibongile Soci said.

The family was in the area to pay respects at a family member's grave.

Soci said the same family was attacked in the same area in May 2013 and had their house burnt down. They then moved to a different village.

No arrests had been made, Soci said.
