Four pupils have been stabbed in a fight on a school bus in Cedara, outside Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said on Saturday.

"ER24 paramedics arrived outside the school and found four patients, aged between 16 and 21, sitting inside and outside the bus where the fight had apparently occurred," spokeswoman Luyanda Majija said.

Two were stabbed in the chest and treated on the scene on Friday. A third had severe facial injuries, and the fourth had been stabbed in the arm.

"Paramedics were told that the incident occurred when approximately 12 males arrived at the school where some jumped onto the bus and started stabbing the learners on the bus," Majija said.

"Before paramedics arrived on scene most of the injured patients had run away to get help from the nearby police station and clinic."

The Witness reported that the attack was believed to be gang-related.

However, it cited Captain Laume van Jaarsveld as saying that the pupil who was stabbed in the face, was a witness in an assault with grievous bodily harm case.

She said that this was the second attack the boy had suffered.

"He was being intimidated. He is in a very serious condition and a case of attempted murder has been opened," Van Jaarsveld was quoted as saying.
