A 15-year-old Limpopo boy charged with raping a baby girl has appeared in the Tzaneen Magistrate's Court, Limpopo police said on Tuesday.

The matter was provisionally withdrawn on Monday pending the results of the DNA tests, Colonel Ronel Otto said.

The teenager would be kept at a place of safety.

Otto said the rape was reported on June 1 at the Letsitele police station. The police's family unit was investigating.

The Sowetan reported that the teen and his younger brother, aged 10, took turns raping their one-year-old cousin.

The two orphans allegedly took the girl from their grandmother's room and raped her near the house, at a village outside Tzaneen.

The child's mother noticed what had happened while bathing her.

When the two were questioned, they allegedly admitted to the crime, the newspaper reported.

The 10-year-old was released into the custody of his guardian.
