A man accused of murder after allegedly setting his son alight and locking him in a room in Tzaneen, has been sent for mental observation, Limpopo police said on Thursday.

Colonel Ronel Otto said that Ritavi Magistrate's Court ordered that Jan Shingange, 65, be sent for psychiatric observation.

The case was postponed to June 20.

Shingane was arrested after allegedly setting his 31-year-old son alight last Thursday.

"It is alleged that the father and son had an argument and that the father sprinkled thinners in the room then set it alight," she said.

The son eventually managed to free himself from the room and was admitted to hospital with severe burns. He died in hospital on Sunday.
