Tshwane municipality has achieved its ambition to be the leading “e-Capital” with the roll-out of the second phase of its multi-million public Wi-Fi connectivity project.
A million internet users in public places around 213 schools in Soshanguve, Mamelodi and Atteridgeville will from today access free wireless data for internent banking, education and health information.
As part of its Vision 2055 vision, the municipality plans to blanket the country's capital with free wireless data to spur economic growth.
About 25 000 users are already benefitting from the first phase rolled out in November last year, covering the Tshwane University of Technology's Soshanguve campus, University of Pretoria's main campus in Hatfield, Tshwane Northe College in Arcadia, Church Square in the inner city as well as Mamelodi community hall. Each zone covers 18 000 squaremetres.
The phase two, to be launched by Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi and Tshwane mayor Kgosientsho Ramokgopa in Ga-Rankuwa today, will make Tshwane the largest free wireless data provider in the country.
Mayor Kgosientsho Ramokgopa announced in the 2014/15 budget speech that that provision of Free Wi-Fi had become a new municipal basic service. He said R150 million had been allocated towards the roll out of additional free Wi-Fi sites.
“This unprecedented intervention will juxtapose Tshwane as an e-Capital of excellence and a driver of education in the country aligned to the creation of a Smart City and a knowledge economy,” said Ramokgopa.
