Defiant students at the University of Limpopo in Ga-Rankuwa, north of Pretoria, have dared management to remove them from campus.

The vice-chancellor and principal, Mahlo Mokgalong, decided to close the Medunsa campus and dissolve its students' representative council following two weeks of protests that have led to damage to property estimated at R1.2-million.

"As far as we are concerned, the SRC is still in place and the campus is not closed," SRC president Malose Marakalala said yesterday. "No students have vacated the campus. We are still here and we are not going anywhere."

Students have burned the campus security control centre and three university vehicles in protest against the failing of 13 final-year medical students.

University spokesman Kgalema Mohuba said the academic programme has been suspended indefinitely and students ordered to vacate the premises, including residences, by 1pm yesterday.
