Two people have been arrested for attacking two metro police officers in Philippi, the City of Cape Town said on Tuesday.

The officers, aged 35 and 29, were at a vehicle checkpoint near the intersection of Duinefontein Road and Govan Mbeki Drive on Monday when they were overpowered by three men, the city said.

One of the attackers disarmed the female officer and fired a shot at her colleague hitting him in the leg.

The men fled the scene but two were caught by the SA Police Service.

The pair, aged 17 and 18, were expected to appear in court soon on charges of attempted murder and robbery.
