Last week it was reported that "the proportion of black Africans between the ages of 25 and 34 with a skilled job shrank from 18% in 1994 to 15% today".

This is equal to a crime against humanity. With more money at its disposal than ever before, the education department is taking our children backwards, not forwards. Blame is to be apportioned entirely on President Jacob Zuma.

He chooses his cabinet, and continues to choose sycophants to head departments instead of competent people.

Where is our patriotism? Surely we want our children to succeed as it will benefit all in our country.

I dare the current crop of educators to be different. Choose to be professional in your teaching and go the extra mile for your pupils.

Dump the trade unions. I see too many teachers in township schools doing the least they can, but happily picking up their cheque at the end of the month. There are outstanding educators, but they are few and far between.
