Media24's news chief Fergus Sampson has resigned, the organisation said on Thursday.

"Ishmet Davidson, head of local and southern newspapers, will step in as acting head of Media24 News," Media24 said in a statement.

Sampson, who has been the chief executive of the news division since 2012, will leave the organisation at the end of the month.

He has cited the reason for his resignation as a desire to pursue other interests.

Media24 chief executive Esmaré Weideman described Sampson as "a great newspaper man, "charismatic, streetwise and smart".
