Vladimir Vermezovic cut a forlorn figure on the touchline last night, probably wondering why he just can't seem to get one over Mpumalanga Black Aces.

Vermezovic has not beaten Aces in three attempts now since joining Orlando Pirates as head coach late last season.

Last night, the Buccaneers were beaten 2-1 by Clive Barker's Aces, who moved into second place on the Absa Premiership standings after this victory.

The win was sealed by a Mabhudi Khenyeza penalty 12 minutes from time.

The goal was scored 10 minutes after Pirates' "super-sub", Lehlohonolo Majoro, had cancelled out Collins Mbesuma's first-half strike.

Mbesuma, who was dumped by Pirates at the end of last season, punished his former employers, scoring just after 12 minutes.

"VV" did not give Mbesuma a look-in last season and the Serbian had to watch in agony as the Zambian headed the ball into an empty net when Bucs goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa failed to clear the ball after coming off his line.

Mbesuma's goal, his third this season, robbed Pirates of their early momentum.

The Buccaneers looked more threatening in the early stages of the game, using Kermit Erasmus's pace upfront to unsettle the home side's defence.

The visitors sent out a warning as early as the first minute when Erasmus's shot from a tight angle struck the upright.

Erasmus had another chance to put the visitors in the lead after 10 minutes, but the striker decided to cross the ball into an empty box when shooting was a better option.

Two minutes later Aces were ahead and they held on to this lead until halftime.

Pirates, however, came out for the second half with renewed vigour, attacking relentlessly as they searched for an equaliser.

Thabo Qalinge, a former Aces player, came on as a substitue and tried by all means to get his side back in the game.

His fierce shot from range midway through the second half forced a brilliant save from Aces goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane.

Mabokgwane, however, was at fault a few minutes later when he brought down Erasmus in the box, and the Sea Robbers were awarded a penalty.

Majoro stepped forward to take the spot kick and made no mistake, sending the keeper the wrong way.

Substitute Khenyeza also slotted home from the spot as Aces sealed their fourth win this season.
