Dame Helen Mirren cuts her own hair and never works out for more than 12 minutes.

L'Oréal Paris has just signed her as its new UK ambassador.

Following in the footsteps of model Karlie Kloss and actress Naomi Watts - as well as Julianne Moore and Jane Fonda - 69-year-old Mirren's signing continues a tradition of power women endorsing the French beauty company.

"I am truly delighted to become an ambassador and join such an impressive group of high achievers," said Mirren.

For the critically acclaimed star, this ambassadorship goes way beyond her looks.

She wryly remarked: "I am not gorgeous. I never was, but I was always okay looking and I'm keen to stay that way."

Mirren's ambassadorship marks a new approach to celebrating age, rather than pushing the anti-ageing message.

"I hope I can inspire other women towards greater confidence by making the most of their natural good looks," said the Oscar-winning actress.

She asked that her campaign photographs be left as they were, without any retouching.

"We are all worth it," she said.
