Photographer Alon Skuy, who took the snap of Senzo's father leaning out the car at the slain footballer's funeral service in Durban, is surprised how it's became a humorous meme on Twitter and Instagram.

While South Africans laugh about the pose,  he saw a man humbled and grateful for the support his son received.

Why did you take the photo?

I was photographing the memorial service for the Sunday Times, and as I walked into the stadium, I was moved by the overwhelming numbers of people who came out to show their respect and appreciation for Senzo Meyiwa.

The intensity in the stadium was palpable. The raw emotion of the thousands of supporters was incredible to be a part of.

What did the photo mean to you?

In the middle of the service, Sam Meyiwa, Senzo's father, did a lap around the stadium to show his gratitude to the crowds in the stands.

What I saw was a man humbled, proud and grateful for the powerful tribute that the fans were paying to his son.

Now that the photo has been turned into a joke?

Hopefully the fact that people find humour in a situation that has profoundly affected the psyche of the nation will be cathartic.
