It took in almost $500-million (R5.76-billion) at the box office and won the hearts of critics but The Lego Moviehas been frozen out by voters for the 87th Oscars, failing to pick up a nomination for either best animated feature or best picture, but its Everything is Awesome!!! was nominated as best original song.

According to review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, 96% of film critics gave The Lego Movie the thumbs-up . There is a sequel planned for 2018 and a spin-off film featuring the character of Batman (voiced by Will Arnett) will be released in 2017.

Other notable snubs included that of Jennifer Aniston, who scored a Golden Globe nomination for Cake but failed to be recognised by the Academy Awards in the best actress category.

Ava DuVernay, the director of Selma, was also overlooked, though the film did score a best picture nomination. DuVernay would have been the first African-American woman to get a best director nomination.

Others who missed the cut were David Oyelowo in the best actor category for Selma , and Clint Eastwood in the best director category for American Sniper , a film that scored six nominations.

Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel lead the nominations with nine apiece, followed by The Imitation Game with eight, Boyhood with six, and Whiplash , Interstellar and Foxcatcher with five apiece.

The best actor nominees are: Steve Carell for Foxcatcher, Bradley Cooper for American Sniper, Benedict Cumberbatch for The Imitation Game, Michael Keaton for Birdman, and Eddie Redmayne for The Theory of Everything.

The best actress nominees are Marion Cotillard for Two Days, One Night , Felicity Jones for The Theory of Everything , Julianne Moore for Still Alice , Rosamund Pike for Gone, Girl and Reese Witherspoon for The Wild.
