It tells the story of a warring parish council in a picturesque corner of England, detailing the minutiae and infighting of village life.

But the television adaptation of JK Rowling's The Casual Vacancy has caused something of a stir in a real Cotswolds village, as visitors get their knickers in a twist over a fictional lingerie shop.

People in Painswick have written in disgust to the parish council, after programme-makers built a risqué underwear shop called "Samantha's Boudoir" in the village centre. Calling it "wholly unsuitable and degrading", they vowed never to visit Painswick again.

The shop is a key part of the plot of The Casual Vacancy, owned by the glamorous Samantha Mollison, played by Keeley Hawes.

Director Jonny Campbell disclosed that the arrival of the racy lingerie shop had raised some eyebrows.

"They complained, but a couple of little old ladies looked in the window, and said: "We've already got all that stuff'."
