Large parts of KwaZulu-Natal are counting the cost of storms that left five people, including a five-day-old baby, dead.

The storms hit on Friday night and extended from Durban towards Stanger, and inland to Pietermaritzburg. Golf ball-size hailstones fell in many areas.

Homes and vehicles were damaged and trees were blown over.

At Sweetwaters, near Pietermaritzburg, a five-day-old baby was killed by a lightning bolt, said Emergency Medical Services spokesman Robert McKenzie.

A 77-year-old man from nearby Tailors Halt was also killed by lightning.

At Durban's southern Umlazi township two people were killed when their homes collapsed during a storm.

A person was injured when a tree fell on a shack in the township.

One man was killed and another critically injured when a mud hut collapsed at Mariannhill, near Durban.

This was the second severe storm to lash the province in the past month.

The province's co-operative governance and traditional affairs department said it had disaster management teams on duty to assess the damage and to assist those affected.

The SA Weather Service said no rain was forecast for the province for the early part of this week.
