The case of a man accused of killing a baby by using her as a weapon to beat his girlfriend was postponed in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court, the National Prosecuting Authority said.

"The matter was postponed for seven days for bail information and further investigation," spokesman Velekhaya Mgobhozi said.

Alexander Forba, a foreign national, would remain in custody to await his next appearance next Tuesday.

Forba's girlfriend previously told police that during an argument in their flat early on Sunday morning, he asked her if he was the two-day-old baby's father.

"He then [allegedly] hit the mother with the baby," Warrant Officer Wanda Olivier said on Monday.

Best Care ambulance services spokesman Xander Loubser said paramedics found the infant wrapped in a towel and drowning in her own vomit.

Beeld reported that the mother told paramedics that after hitting her with the child the father threw the baby on the ground. She apparently had a wound on her forehead.

The two were taken to a nearby hospital where the baby died.
