The UCT Ikey Tigers and Maties are both losing early ground in the initial stages of the 2015 Varsity Cup with neither able to record a win after two rounds.

Ikeys, the defending champions, slumped to a 39-24 defeat to UP-Tuks in Pretoria on Monday, which came after a week one draw against Maties.

The Stellenbosch boys backed up a draw with Ikeys with a second draw against Pukke in Potchefstroom.

Maties left it late by scoring a 78th-minute try to secure a share of the spoils, but it was another patchy performance from a team that have won the tournament three times.

Ikeys were similarly disappointing, making a slow start to the match, which ultimately left them with too much to do in the second half.

The loss means Ikeys are languishing in seventh position on the standings with three points.

Maties are in fifth on six points and are also out of semifinal position.
