A Zimbabwean who ate his love rival's heart was supposed to be sentenced in the Cape Town High Court yesterday, but now it could be months before this happens after an investigation was ordered into whether he is a danger to society.

Andrew Chimboza murdered Mbuyiselo Manona, 62, during a fight over girlfriend Nomonde Soloshe-Tshabalala in Gugulethu last June.

According to police, Chimboza removed Manona's heart and ate it with a knife and fork. He pleaded guilty earlier this month.

Chimboza was supposed to be sentenced yesterday, but Judge Ashley Binns-Ward committed him to Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital for 30 days for evaluation. However, the hospital has a huge waiting list for beds.

Binns-Ward said if Chimboza was found to be a danger to society the court would hand down an indefinite sentence which could be reviewed after seven years. He urged Chimboza to cooperate with his assessors.

Manona's family was not pleased with the delay. His younger sister, Thembela Manona, said: "We need closure. There is no need for him to be sent to Valkenberg Hospital, psychologists have already said that there is nothing wrong with him. He must be sentenced for once and all."

Sentencing procedures were postponed to March 27.
