Three men allegedly in possession of illegal firearms were arrested in separate incidents on Thursday morning, Johannesburg metro police said.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said in the first incident an officer spotted a vehicle speeding along the Golden Highway in Devland with the vehicle's lights switched off.

Officers chased the White Fortuner and when they had stopped it they found an unlicensed firearm.

Two men in the their late 30s were arrested on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and were expected to appear in the Kliptown Magistrate's Court.

In the other case, officers received a tip-off and found a man wanted for murder, attempted murder, business robbery and hijacking, at his home in Bramfischerville.

He also allegedly had an unlicensed firearm in his possession.

He was taken to Roodepoort police station and would appear in court later.
