We all remember the euphoric atmosphere and success of the Fifa World Cup.

It was a happy time and South Africa was proud. The international spotlight was on us and it changed many people's perceptions of our country. Many tourists moved us to the top of their international visit list. The projected benefits from hosting such an event sound phenomenal and positive.

However, there are a few factors that need to be considered before the champagne is opened about hosting the Commonwealth Games.

We have a political stomach ache and economic problems. The questionable e-tolls have been forced on us without a referendum to test public opinion. Durban folk need to be on the alert for e-tolls being sneaked in under the guise of fixing roads for the Games. Petrol prices and the Road Accident Fund should be taking care of our roads and not paying out for things such as whiplash.

Eskom cannot meet demand and has complete disregard for electrical protection and maintenance, in favour of bigger pay cheques and bonuses for upper management. No wonder Eskom was voted the best place to work.

There is no doubt that we have many tax dodgers. This puts huge strain on the few million who pay.

The government cannot continually bully those who are making a good living, paying tax and contributing to the economy. In Greece, the Olympics contributed to debt.
