Relying on a smartphone app to detect cancer is "not yet warranted", doctors at the US National Cancer Institute say.

BREAKTHROUGH

An array of apps claim to assist with the early detection of some cancers, particularly skin cancer. But the institute recommends that a doctor be consulted if changes in moles or skin sensation are noted.

NUTRITION BITE

TRAVELLING by air can play havoc with your health. Despite the temptation, avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks on the plane. They add to the dehydration associated with flying and could keep you awake at night.

IF YOU DO ONE THING

KEEP the baby on the breast. A new study published in The Lancet Global Health has found that prolonged breast-feeding is linked to higher intelligence, longer schooling and higher earnings as an adult. The presence in breast milk of long-chain saturated fatty acids is probably responsible for its beneficial effects on intelligence.

BIZARRE

A STUDY has shown that people with ''positive" initials - ones that spell out words such as "JOY" or "WOW" - live nearly four-and-a-half years longer than people with neutral initials. "DUDs" and "ASSs" live nearly three years less. Other initials that might shorten life: ILL and DED. - Compiled by Andrea Nagel
